NYC Marathon Recovery 101 PAIGE DUNN

What does recovery look like post NYC Marathon for this marathon Mom? With a few of my favorite recovery essentials it was a pretty easy road. I left the city with a big smile and a thirst for more racing. (Next sufferfest yet to be determined)

As a new Mom, this marathon was unlike any I’d ever done before. I’ve actually done New York before, but this was my first time trying to balance motherhood, training, and a full-time job. For me that meant little to no training. I’ve heard coaches say that it is good to go in to an event a bit undertrained but I don’t think running twice a week for a couple of months is really what they meant. The good news is I went in to the race completely injury free and with fresh legs. The bad news is…it hurt. But I still loved every minute. And thanks to a few of my favorite recovery tools, I am now feeling great and ready for my next adventure.

First up after the race was jumping in to my 110% Juggler Knickers. Nothing feels better than the combo of compression with cold therapy. My quads, hamstrings, hips, and knees were all happy. And whoever came up wit the idea of combining ice packs within the compression garment – brilliant. A definite favorite in my recovery toolbox.

Next up, rolling out on Trigger Point Performance Therapy’s Grid 2.0 Revolutionary Foam Roller. Using this foam roller to roll out my quads and hamstrings, while painful and hard to force myself to do post race, was probably the best thing I could have done for myself. I saw other runners limping down the streets of NYC the day after the race and I was not one of them. Sure I looked a little odd traveling with my Grid but it was worth the random glares.

I treated my sore feet to some love from my Zensah compression socks and my K-Swiss Blade Light Recover shoes. I can honestly say these shoes are so comfortable I could sleep in them. Lightweight with just the right amount of arch support. They feel like slippers and I didn’t want to take them off. (P.S. They are also great to travel in – easy on/off through airport security and super comfy on the plane)

The best part of my marathon recovery was a visit to Robert De Niro’s famed Locando Verde restaurant in Tribeca. Sure I was barely keeping my eyelids open, but the Pumpkin Agnolotti with brown butter, sage and amaretti and a glass of the 2008 Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano was completely worth staying up just a little bit longer. No De Niro sighting but word was Jay-Z was in the house.

And as sad as I was to leave NYC, I was thrilled to be back home in my own bed. Every time I go away and return to my own bed I smile as I sink in to my Invigo mattress topper. When I first received this product to test out I was unsure that I felt it would make any difference in the comfort of my bed or the quality of my sleep. And now I’m beyond hooked and buying all of my family members one for Christmas.
